Frequently Asked Questions
This isn't a real "F.A.Q." as there's nobody asking me anything. Instead, outlined below are the mechanics of this site.
What is the "Filipino Link Exchange"?
As stated above, the "Exchange", as I would like it to be called, is basically a site directory. The goal of the site is to provide Filipino site owners an easy way to publicize themselves as well as to discover other Filipino-made sites. The main difference of our directory from the others available in the web, aside from the Pinoy pride, is the special scoring system which features sites and ranks them depending on the number of links they've built with other members.
How does this "special scoring system" work?
Like other site directories, sites are also ranked by the number of hits they get. Sites get one point for each hit they get. Simple? Here's the fun part. The number of points they get is then multiplied with the number of mutual links they've made with other sites listed in the Exchange. Finally, the number of hits you make to other sites are added to their respective scores.
Example: your site received 10 hits for the day. You have made 5 links to other sites with yours. You made 20 hits for other different sites. Your site gets 10 × (5 + 1) + 20 = 80 for the day.
The highest scoring site for each category for each day is then featured to their respective category for the day. In addition, these sites gets featured in the main page of the Exchange.
In addition, the listing itself is ordered such that those without hits are ranked higher than those who have some, giving a chance for everyone to be on the top.
How do I get listed?
First you have to register an account. Then, hit the submissions page. Do note that you have to have a news feed (which our site attempts to automatically detect) in order to qualify for the Exchange. Simply follow the instructions there, and wait until a moderator approves your submission. We might need to contact you to confirm if you truly are Filipino if there's little to no evidence in your site that it was Filipino-made.
Do I really have to have a news feed?
Yes. For now, yes. Sorry. This might change in the future, though.
Why do I need a news feed?
The Exchange automatically aggregates content from your news feed up to three months old. They are then displayed along with your site's information at the lists. This helps visitors actually see the content of your site.
Don't worry, though. The Exchange only grabs the first couple of hundred characters of your content as a preview so that they have an incentive to visit your full content at your website.
How many sites can I submit?
Ten. For now, again. This might change too.
I just submitted my site, why isn't it on the list yet?
Your site will be pending moderator approval. It should be on the "Manage Links" page, grayed-out. Once it's approved, you should now be able to see it in the exchange.
My site's already approved, and I don't have any hits yet. Why isn't it on the top of the list?
To prevent too much stress on our database, our pages are cached for faster delivery. They are refreshed (if needed) every thirty minutes. Try again a bit later, it should be there.
Why don't my hits register in the statistics?
The Exchange only allows one hit per visitor per day, and will not count duplicate hits. Also, the system automatically detects fraudulent hits, and will deduct scores from offending site owners. so it's unwise to try to cheat the system.
I already have some hits, but why is my score still zero?
Scores are updated once a day. During this update, the featured sites are also changed.
My score went down. What happened?
Every time the scores are updated, your score for the previous day is halved before adding the score you get from that day's hits. This is done to keep the scoring table fresh, and give a better chance for those who were almost featured actually get featured.
I have a higher score than the currently featured Site in my category. Why am I not featured?
You can only get featured once every other day for each time you have already been featured. This means if you've been featured once, you have to wait at least a day after to get featured again. If you've already been featured twice, you have to wait for two.
Don't fret! We only count the number of features your site has had for the past three months, so sites that really deserve the honor to be featured frequently will be able to do so.
How do I build links?
This feature is currently being developed, but once available, it should be as simple as visiting the link's page, making a link in your site, and pressing some buttons.
I don't have a website, or I'm not Filipino. Am I not allowed here?
You're more than welcome here! In fact, you're encouraged to explore and visit sites that tickle your fancy in the Exchange. You don't have to register an account for that.
